4good support, thicker than most mini's  Jul 29, 2010
By Melorods
I was happy to find this option online. My daughter inherited a mini crib from my family but the mattress that came with it is too thin (1 inch). The Colgate Mattress fit the crib like a glove and has enough patting for my newborn. I also bought the waterproof quilted mattress porta-crib mattress pad for extra support. Its nice and compact for those parents that want practicality. This is my third child, so necessities are what I'm investing in, they grow out of things so quickly!

1Misleading - NOT so eco-friendly  Apr 11, 2011
By Micah S. Mclellan "Micah 6:8"
At first, I was glad to finally have found an "eco-friendlier" mattress that would fit our mini crib.
The first time my daughter slept in the crib, I noticed that her head had a chemical smell when I picked her up. There was an organic cotton mattress pad and sheet between her and the mattress and whenever she's slept on the mattress, she smells like plastic.
So, I checked the actual mattress tag. Right on the tag I read that the mattress contains 100% polyurethane. Polyurethane is essentially like solidified gasoline - flammable and gives off toxic gas. To keep the mattress flame retardant, polyurethane mattresses have to be treated with other chemicals.
Colgate can call the mattress whatever it likes and make it out of whatever it likes, but it should list what the mattress is really made out of. When I emailed Colgate, they said the contents of the mattress is legally supposed to be listed. At this time, amazon does not list that the mattress is 100% polyurethane.
Maybe the way the mattress is made is better for the environment, but it is certainly not better for babies.

5Strong Chemical Smell  Jan 23, 2011
By isiwmbiru
We purchased this mattress for our portable crib, which came with a really lame 1/2 inch pad. It fit the crib well (no gaps) and we were initially happy with our purchase, because it claimed to be a more natural mattress, and we hoped our son would have a lower exposure to toxic fumes. At first, it didn't seem to have a chemical or plastic odor. We also liked that it was made in the USA, and was reasonably priced. However, when my son moved out of the portable crib, we stored the mattress in his closet, with a sheet on it to protect it from dust. Recently, I went to move the mattress and removed the sheet to put it in our closet, and it had a very strong chemical odor--so much so, that I had to put it outside. And when I looked at the tag, it says 100% polyurethane, which means it is most likely doused with fire retardant chemicals, since untreated polyurethane is extremely flammable. This is not disclosed in the product description. Definitely a disappointing example of "greenwashing" to sell a product.

5Very Good Mattress  Feb 28, 2012
By Maximka
We bought the Ecru version of this mattress for the Davinci Alpha mini crib after returning the MDB Crescent mattress that we were very disappointed in. We are very happy with this product, it fits the crib very well, it is light (making sheet changes easier), it is firm (but not uncomfortably so) and it is easy to get bedding for (we bought great sheets for it at b4y b4y b@by).

Regarding the chemical smell mentioned in some of the reviews, ours didn't have any. I am not sure, but I think that problem is specific to the white mattress not the ecru. It is strange that Amazon grouped them together into one product page as they are entirely different mattresses, with the ecru ecopad being much more environmentally friendly than the white alternative.

4Not as green as I'd like, but better than other options  Oct 19, 2011
By Momma MM "Michelle M."
This mattress, was fine and had less of an oder to it than my previous mattress, which I returned. I will admit that it did have a slight band-aid smell, but I used an organic wool mattress pad (which I HIGHLY recommend) and the smell never penetrated to my daughter. I too was wondering about the discrepency between what was listed on the mattress and what was written on the amazon description, so I wrote an email to the manufacturer. Below is the response I received (within less than 18 hours):

First of all, thank you for your purchase. While rare, manufacturers' defects do occur. Please allow me to express my regrets that you are unhappy with your purchase. Many, many moms have bought this product and are very happy with it and it is disappointing to us to know there is a consumer out there that is not happy. All foam mattresses are urethane foam. What makes this mattress more ecologically friendlier than most is that the foam used to make this mattress replaces much of the petroleum based oils used to make the urethane foam with oils from plants. Unfortunately, at the current time the California Bureau of Home Furnishings does not distinguish from the two types of foams, just as it does not from organic material to regular material. We would be afoul of the law if we listed a non available component.

The cover is a more ecologically friendly damask cloth cover versus a standard vinyl cover. Further, parents want their baby mattresses to have a waterproof cover. Urethane is used to make the damask cloth waterproof on the mattress she purchased. On the mattress you purchased the waterproofing was purposely put on the back side of the cover so that cloth would be closest to baby. All mattresses covered with any type of cloth claiming to be waterproof have had some type of waterproofing applied.
