Like the taste, not thrilled with ingredients Nov 18, 2010
By Clare Jay I have used Tom's of Maine toothpaste for about 20 years, but am now switching to another brand; Tom's which now belongs to Colgate Palmolive, has ditched its original very simple formulation in favor of a much more commercial and synthetic formulation. Fennel flavor has been my favorite, and until now I've been reliably cheered to read the very simple list of ingredients on the tube. Now, however, the list has changed, and includes all sorts of ingredients -- xylitol (a sweetener), sodium laurel sulfate, and "natural flavors" -- that I don't want in my toothpaste. No more propolis, no more myrrh. "Natural flavors", thanks to the FDA, means chemically synthesized flavors that match those derived from natural substances. That means that you get a fake jolt of fennel, or mint, or wintergreen, not the real thing. "Natural flavors" is a cheaper alternative to real flavors, and lets Colgate Palmolive manufacture a paste that suggests a healthy alternative to more mainstream brands, while not actually being significantly different from those brands.

might actually get you brushing again - and that is a good thing. Sep 20, 2009

we know how hard it is to get people to brush regularly, especially in that large northern nation . . .
This is a real break from the flouridated candy toothpaste that gets shoved our way.
This really works, and gets you brushing again, before those chompers fall out.
While beekeeping I learned the joy of propolis, a by product in the hive which develops on the outside of the interior frames and must be scraped off with a hive tool (really a hooked multi-purpose paint scraper). Great stuff to chew on while smoking the bees, and really healthy feeling. Sold by its weight in gold in the health food stores, free to apiculturists. Best stuff ever to chew on, and discernible in this toothpaste recipe.
Living way out here in the desert hours away from urban centers, amazon provides a great service in sending out these six packs of toothpaste. So I won't have to re-order for a long time; I hope it is still available, even at this price. This is the brand and model I used to search health food and large supermarket stores for, available right here on the amazon for fair market value.
Best you can get. Tom's.

For mint haters Jan 29, 2008
By B. Wissler Mint tends to make me gag, and it's hard to find any toothpastes without it. I have been using Tom's fennel flavor for several years and plan to keep using it!

Great Toothpaste May 06, 2010
By Paul Moskowitz Tom's of Maine Toothpaste
Tom's is a small company, employing fewer than two hundred people. It was founded in 1970 and then purchased by Colgate in 2006. Fortunately, Colgate has left Tom's alone to manage their business according to their original principles.
Tom's makes natural products. The toothpaste contains no sugar, sweeteners, or artificial flavoring. By contrast, I looked at a tube of Colgate toothpaste that I have on the shelf. It contains "flavor," whatever that is, "saccharine," and "propylene glycol." The last ingredient is a less-toxic form of anti-freeze. One advantage of Tom's toothpaste is that we do not have to worry about ingesting poisons when we use it.
I have been using Tom's for years. The toothpaste comes in many flavors. On Amazon, you can find Peppermint, Spearmint, Fennel, Orange-Mango, Cinnamint, Wintermint, Apricot, Soothing Mint, True Mint, and Gingermint, among others. I prefer the Peppermint flavor, which is refreshing, but not overwhelming. The toothpaste is available in sizes from 1 ounce to 6 ounces.
I do not exactly live in a wilderness area, but my local stores no longer carry Tom's. Fortunately, it can be found on Amazon and other web sites. The prices do vary from vendor to vendor, so check for the best price.

Grown up toothpaste Jun 18, 2009

I hate the cloyingly sweet mint (of every kind) commercial toothpaste comes in. I also am not wild about a list of chemical products I can't pronounce being in a product I am to place in my mouth twice daily. I love Tom's fennel. A natural product with a nice herbal flavor. No whitening, no fresh stripe, no glitter. Clean, refreshing, natural product.
